Feasts of the Assumption and another Italian Festival, the Germanfest Picnic, some big Corn Festivals, Shaker Woods, plus Tomatoes, Potatoes and Pickles – Oh my!
In some cities, it’s a Red, White and Green kind of festival weekend, and I’m not just talking about the Tomato, Potato and Pickles Festivals going on (more on that later).
This weekend is pretty close to August 15, known to Catholics as the Feast of the Assumption, when Mary rose into Heaven rather than taking the usual route aka death. In Ohio, the most popular Feast of the Assumption takes place in Cleveland’s Little Italy (Review), but there is also a Feast going on in Broadview Heights (Review), not to mention a great Italian Festival in Warren (Review).
If you prefer kraut with your sausage instead of sauce, then the GermanFest Picnic in Dayton (Review) is for you. You can check out my Review, but keep in mind that the festival has moved locations since I last visited the festival. Now, the festival takes place in Dayton’s original German neighborhood – St. Anne’s Hill.

Now let’s get back to the Red, White and Green I mentioned before that doesn’t refer to the Italian Festivals.
- Red: the Tomato Festival in Reynoldsburg (Review)
- White: Potatoes N’ Such: Dayton Potato Festival
- Green: Akron Pickle Fest
Also this weekend, there are a ton of Church Festivals, two fantastic Corn Festivals in North Ridgeville (Review) and Swanton (Review), a Celtic Festival in Painesville Township (Review), the first weekend of the Shaker Woods Festival (shopping, baby) in Columbiana (Review), a Hippie Festival in Logan (Review in another city), and so much more.
Also, if you like good music, I would suggest checking out Oliver Hazard Day in Waterville. The band – Oliver Hazard – is from Waterville so its a celebration of one town’s own, something I really like. The band will be performing at the festival along with some bands/artists (Sam Burchfield, Field Guide, Jon Zenz), plus food trucks, an Oliver Hazard IPA (no lie) and more.

The Oliver Hazard Day festival is one I’ve meant to go to for years, but unfortunately, I’ll be out of state this weekend, missing it once more.
