This post documents my experience on September 8, 2013.

Way back when, after the British burned some land in Connecticut during the American Revolution, the Americans who lost their homes were able to move west to the Western Reserve of Connecticut in present-day Ohio…

…on land that would eventually become known as the Firelands.

As a result, some settlers from Lyme, Connecticut established Lyme Township in 1808 to start their lives anew…

…only to have their histories eventually preserved by Historic Lyme Village

..in the form of Pioneer Days.

Pioneer Days was an invitation for festival goers to explore camps scattered about…

…watch craftsmen demonstrations…

…purchase items from outside vendors, such as walking sticks and maple syrup…

…chew the cud with historical figures, such as Ben Franklin…

…check out the animals…

…tour historic buildings…

…shop in others…

…enjoy various displays…

…resist climbing up some of the decor…

…jump to the sound of the canon boom…

…lounge on the porch of the General Store…

…play old-fashioned kids’ games in the large field…

…and whistle along with the calliope.

There actually was quite a good chunk of land to cover…

…with plenty of structures…

…local craftsmen…

…living history reenactors…

…and historical organizations (US Christian Commission).

There was even a building…

…where you could nab some lunch…

…and get yourself a buffalo burger and pickled egg.

The music made it even more enjoyable.
