Omakase at Kengo Sushi and Yakitori – Toledo, Ohio

Last year, my wife gifted me an omakase dinner at Kengo Sushi & Yakitori, a Toledo restaurant of which I had heard wonderful things.

With our schedules and the distance, it took us some time to plan an evening to go out…

…but we finally did this weekend…

…and it was completely worth it!

Our meal started with a delicate steamed custard, lobster and caviar…

…followed by a flavorful sea bass and pickled onion.

Next came one of my favorite courses: an imported Japanese scallop cut into two slices and topped with a sea urchin sauce and roasted Shishito pepper.

Then came the yakitori with chicken thigh…

…pork belly…

…and chicken meatball…

…with a creamy grilled avocado and soy to finish off the hot courses.

The remaining courses were all about sushi, starting with otoro nigiri…

…followed by salmon…

…and still more beautiful pieces of fish…

…as well as some incredible wagyu meat that was so uniquely delicious.

And the dinner ended with a delicious roll.

By the end, we were stuffed and the long drive home allowed us some time to digest our food a bit before enjoying some ice cream on the couch.

I didn’t see dessert on the menu nor was it offered, but I was a little surprised that something like tamago (sweet egg) wasn’t a possibility.

Still, this didn’t take away from the incredible experience that we had at Kengo with delicious yakitori and hot dishes, melt-in-your-mouth nigiri, great service and a wonderful atmosphere.

It’s a place to where we will surely return!
