Enon Apple Butter Festival – Enon, Ohio – My Experience

2023 DATE: October 14-15, 2023

This post documents my experience on October 8, 2011.

Although tiny in size, the village of Enon, located between Dayton and Springfield, has a few things going for it.

First off, it’s home to Ohio’s second largest conical Indian burial mound (Enon Mound).

Secondly, it is headquarters to the Speedway gas station chain.

And thirdly…

…it holds the long-running Enon Apple Butter Festival.

Celebrating it’s 34th year this year, the Enon Apple Butter Festival was first started by the Enon Community Historical Society as a way to raise money.

But, as time went on and the festival grew…

…it has also become a fundraiser for area churches…

…school groups…

…Cub Scouts and more.

Some of these groups, like the Mad River Township Fire & EMS Dept,

…sold apple-shaped bake goods…

…and cute culinary concoctions…

…while the other groups sold hot food cooked on-site.

In fact, all hot food was required to be cooked on-site…

…including food from local restaurant vendors…

…while a few food trucks were off the main festival path.

I actually liked these rules, since it brought about a more hometown festival feeling where most food products were freshly made…

…including the festival’s main attraction.

In the heart of the Enon Apple Butter Festival…

…the historical society cooked, bottled and sold fresh apple butter right on the grounds…

…and festival goers could get up close to see (and hear) the apple butter cooking.

Meanwhile, in the land of vendors…

…only items of “homemade quality” were allowed…

…bringing in selections of homemade crafts…

…various dish towels.

…apple crafts…

…and even flower decor.

Children, in the meantime…

…were able to check out the safety trailer…

…or take part in art activities, thanks to Indian Valley Middle School.

But, as I found out, some kids present didn’t have time to take advantage of these possibilities….

…for there were potatoes to sell.
