64.) Salt Creek Valley Festival – Richmond Dale – September 11, 2010

Richmond Dale is an unincorporated community southeast of Chillicothe that you can find right off of US Route 35. And when you get off the exit during their Salt Creek Valley Festival, you can find a huge “Road Closed” sign keeping you from entering town.

Fortunately, I was able to turn down a narrow road…

k
…and easily park myself next to a corn field.
k

The festival takes place at the intersection of Main Street and Vigo Road…

k
…and even in this photo you can see most of it.
k

This didn’t concern me much because I didn’t really expect the festival to be all that exciting. Like festivals that celebrate the town or area (as opposed to a crop or idea), I had been disappointed so many times that I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

But it was early on…

k
…when I was checking out those orange sugar cookies…
k

…that I remembered how it was the people that make festivals special. And as I chatted with the owner of that booth about festivals and the area, I started to see more potential in the Salt Creek Valley Festival and the community.

k

I looked over the food with a refreshed spirit…

k
…taking delight in recognizing the vendor from Chillicothe
k
k
…getting excited by seeing my first Amish fried pie booth…
k
k
…and even laughing at the political commentary.
k

But that’s not all I noticed.

k
While most of the vendors were clumped together…
k
k

…I noticed a lone vendor sitting off in the distance.

This wouldn’t have grabbed my attention so much…

…if I hadn’t already seen the Bible Stories caboose…
k
k

…a good distance beyond the rides and games.

Whether these booths were out there to avoid a vendor’s booth fee…

k
…or fearful of the gun and bow raffles…
k
…I’m not too sure…
k
k
…but the people at the welcoming booth seemed friendly enough.
k

And the people of Richmond Dale seemed to be a proud community…

k
…as they put themselves on display to the world…
k
k
…through their exhibition of local talent and history…
k
k
…even managing some entertainment for the stage.
k

I even saw some celebrities my nephew and niece would have appreciated…

SpongeBob SquarePants was particularly welcoming…
k
k
…while Mickey was a little elusive.
k
k
It took a few shots…
k
k

….but I finally got him to smile (at someone else).

  1. We love this hometown festival. The lewisbrothers all except for dennisthemenace grew up in and around this small village. It would be hard to find more down to earth people that heavily support a festival. Come out for the good food, vendors and of course music. Check out lewisbrothersband.com and see for yourself. Small town people know how to have a good time.
